What depression is, from the inside
People usually explain depression as a very great sadness. But anyone who has lived it knows that does not fit. Sadness is alive, there is movement. Depression is often the opposite: it is absence, it is when even feeling sad would be a relief, because it would be feeling something.
Phenomenology describes this with a precision that seems to me more faithful to the experience than talking only about chemistry. It speaks of time, of the body, and of the world.
Time slows almost to a stop. The world moves on, everyone makes plans, and you are stuck in a now that does not pass, unable to imagine tomorrow. The body grows heavy: getting out of bed takes a strength nobody sees from outside. And, perhaps most importantly, the world stops calling you. The coffee that used to pull you to the kitchen, the book that asked to be read, the message from a friend that invited an answer, all of it goes silent. The world does not become sad. It becomes mute.
That is why "go for a walk, go and see a friend" rarely helps. You are asking someone to answer calls they genuinely no longer hear.
Seeing it this way changes the care. Depression stops being laziness or weakness and becomes what it is: a transformation in the way the world appears. This does not replace serious follow-up, which sometimes includes medical support, and I say so when that is the case. But it gives the person back the dignity of their experience.
If the world has been mute for you, we can start looking, slowly, for where it might speak again.
